Does the device work without an M.2 SSD?

Yes, if you use a supported external USB storage device. An internal drive does, however, provide convenient permanent storage.

Is an HDMI cable required?

Only for direct playback on a TV. It is not required to manage files through a browser.

Can I share an entire folder?

Yes. A link can point to a file or folder, and access can be limited by expiry time and download count.
